Ms Ann Garms OAM

Ann Garms

Ms Garms has been a leading figure in Queensland hospitality, tourism and heritage since the late 1970s. She has been responsible for the refurbishment of several distinguished properties, including some of Brisbane's first fine dining restaurants, from the Olde Courthouse and Petrie Mansions to the internationally successful Roseville Restaurant at Newstead.

Recognising an increasing demand for training in Brisbane's emerging tourism and hospitality industry, Ms Garms established the College of Tourism and Hospitality (COTAH) in 1984. COTAH has received numerous awards, including the Queensland Tourism Award four times and the Best Provider of Industry Education Award. In 2001 the Queensland Government recognised COTAH as a Centre of Excellence, with the Ann Garms International Scholarship being awarded to graduates who excel in the field of hospitality and tourism. In recognition of her services to tourism, hospitality and the community, Ms Garms was awarded the Order of Australia by Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1991.

Heritage preservation has been an ongoing passion for Ms Garms. She has been an active campaigner to preserve Brisbane's historic buildings, initiating the first Heritage Preservation Legislation passed by the Queensland Government. In 1985, she was awarded the Heritage Preservation Award by the National Trust of Queensland for "excellence in heritage preservation".

Ms Garms continues her involvement with Queensland's tourism, hospitality and heritage industries with Ann Garms Gifts Bistro as well as establishing an interior design, furnishing and construction/renovation business.
